T
he Ransom Everglades Raider Chess Team was bold and brilliant at the 2014 United States
Chess Federation (USCF) National High School Championship hosted in San Diego, California
from April 4-6. After 3 days, 7 rounds, and nearly 30 hours of competitive chess the team tied
for first with Niles North of Skokie, Illinois after an impressive string of upsets, strategic draws, and
the expectation of defeat. The team competed against 27 schools and nearly 200 players in the K12
U1600 classification. More than 900 hundred players from across the country were in attendance.
Leading up to Nationals the team finished 2nd in the State, receiving the 3rd place trophy on tie
breaks at the highly contested 2014 Florida State Chess League (FSCL) Florida Scholastic State
Championship hosted in Orlando, Florida from March 14-16.
