T
he Ransom Everglades Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team, under Coach Peter Lehmann and Assistant
Coach Andres Barbosa, won the Class 1A State Tennis Championship on April 17th, completing a
memorable season. The Raiders’ tournament point total was more than doubled that of the second
place team, American Heritage of Delray Beach, the team that the Raiders finished second to in last year’s
State Championships. This season’s crown was the second state tennis title in three years for the Ransom
Everglades girls.
The team had had an outstanding season even before the state tournament, boasting a record of 14-1,
including winning the Deco Turf Invitational High School Team Championships in Louisville, Kentucky beating
two-time defending champ Baylor School of Chattanooga, Tennessee in the finals – the first loss suffered
by Baylor in 46 matches. The Raiders’ season also included dominating wins over traditional powerhouses
American Heritage and St. Andrews. The girls went undefeated in their district, with the season’s only loss
being a one point loss to eventual Class 2A State Champ, Gulliver Prep.

Claudia MacKenzie ’14
