the Supreme Court, in reaction to the Court hearing a case about health care coverage for contraception
under the Affordable Care Act. Students had the rest of the day free to explore the Smithsonian museums,
taking the opportunity to witness the protests, before heading to the museums. The remainder of the day was
spent on the National Mall, with students meeting up in the late afternoon for another highlight: an evening
of bowling in the Truman Bowling Alley at the Old Executive Office Building – thanks again to
Lisa August ’76
for setting it up for us.
Day Four
After wandering through Arlington National Cemetery and witnessing the changing of the guard at the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier, we took a tour of the Pentagon, personally led by Rear Admiral Paul Becker, Director
of Intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (and brother to RE’s own Mr. Mike Becker!). Students saw many
areas of the Pentagon that are off-limits to the public, and Admiral Becker took us to lunch at the Pentagon’s
food court, where he and his staff answered questions from the students. Then it was onto the Newseum, an
incredible “shrine” to the First Amendment and the role of the press in American society. The day wrapped
up with a (very cold!!) walking tour of the MLK, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials, followed by a leisurely dinner
near our hotel in Dupont Circle.
Day Five
On our final day, before heading back to the warmth of Miami, we met up with Lisa August once again at the
White House, this time for a tour of the East Wing/main house. Not only was it great to see the ceremonial
rooms and incredible art, but the students finally found one of the sharpshooters stationed on the roof of the
White House, completing our DC version of “Where’s Waldo.”
Trip to Washington, D.C., continued.
