Summer Explorations at RE: An Experience of
Innovation and Learning
Charlie Housiaux
, Director of Summer Explorations
This is the final article in a three-part series that introduces the Ransom Everglades Community
to
Summer
Explorations.
STEM
T
he final focus of
Summer Explorations
is STEM, and with the Arts and Social Action, we feel that Summer
Explorations gives students the chance to learn about innovative and lasting fields in the 21st century.
STEM education focuses on the interconnections of four disciplines: science, technology, engineering,
and math. In offering four unique courses in the STEM-themed session, we hope to explore this synthesis in
education and offer interesting courses to students in grades 6 – 12.
Exploring Aviation
is a course unique to Ransom Everglades because we have our very own FAA certified flight
simulator, which is a part of the RE Flyers Club. Nathaniel Johansson, class of 2014, and Astrid Dalins, Fine
Arts department faculty, are co-teaching this one-week exploration into aviation. Students in grades 9 – 12
will log hours on the simulator and learn about the physics of flying as well as the history of aviation. Robert
Dubard, science department faculty, is teaching
Robotics and Engineering.
In this two-week course, open
to rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, students will work in a hands-on workshop to create mouse-trap derby
cars, design bridges and print them in 3D, and study the world of basic robotics, among other mini-projects
and explorations. The third offering is
South Florida Ecology Lab
, taught by science department faculty Robin
Escobedo. This course, open to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, gives students the chance to learn about
the ecosystems that comprise South Florida, especially the coastal ecosystem of Ransom Everglades’ high
school campus. Students will also research original flora of Ransom School for Boys and create a targeted
