2014 Star Awards Presented to Four RE Students

E
ach school year, the Independent Schools of South Florida (ISSF) presents the ISSF
Star Award to students who have demonstrated great commitment to their education,
dedication to their school and its mission, personal responsibility and integrity, and
who have acted as role models for their classmates. Congratulations to the four eighth grade
students selected as the 2014 ISSF Star Awards recipients:

Middle School Mathletes Go To State!

en students competed in the local MathCounts competition held on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Miami
Dade College. Students take two individual tests and a team test to determine both individual and team
awards. Students competing were
Jacob Tie-Shue ’18, Ryan Tie-Shue ’18, Anna Mistele ’19, Valeria
Vela ’19, Sofia del Rio ’19, Makenzie Love ’19, William Mathes ’19, Ilija Wan-Simm ’19, Dylan Tie-Shue
’20
, and
Ben Thorpe ’20
. Finishing in the top ten were Valeria Vela in 8th, Jacob Tie-Shue in 4th, Dylan Tie-
Shue in 3rd, and the overall individual champion was Ryan Tie-Shue! The team of Jacob, Ryan, Valeria, and
Anna earned second place team honors, qualifying them for the state competition in Orlando. In addition,
Ransom Everglades mathletes won the Ciphering Round, which is a speed competition to answer the most
questions correctly.
The state competition was held on Thursday, March 20, 2014 and these students represented RE well. In the
individual competition, as our top scorer, Ryan Tie-Shue finished in 31st place in a field of over 250 students
and was the highest finisher among students from Miami-Dade County. Our team placed in the top third of
all schools competing. Well done, mathletes!
