Don’t Throw in the Towel
E
llen Moceri reminds our children each year at the beginning of the fourth quarter that this is a
time for gratitude. This is a time to show gratitude by arriving each day prepared for class and
ready to engage. I am always inspired when I hear her message. It is a time for our children to
realize how much their teachers have helped them develop mentally and physically during the year, and
they can show their gratitude by continuing to work hard.
So instead of reacting to the fourth quarter as a time to “throw in the towel” let us parents reflect
upon the school year; look at all our children have experienced and how much they have grown, and yes
embrace the fact that there is still more to experience.
So far some have traveled to Montreal and Quebec City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C.,
Chicago, Connecticut, Maryland, China, Poland and Israel. Some have conquered the 10,000 Islands on
the Outward Bound trip. Some have toured the White House and the Pentagon. Some have participated
in Model U.N., and others have debated at Harvard.
Some have participated at Districts, Regionals, and yes, won the State Championship. Some have
earned ratings of Superior and/or Excellent at Band Competitions. Some have won Photography
contests. Some have performed in, produced, or directed a musical or play, while some learned to work
the sound and lights.
Some have learned how to build a robot, a pinhole camera, a motor, and even how to launch a rocket.
Some have learned to fly a plane in a flight simulator and some have learned to sail.
Some have experienced a random act of kindness, and then gone on to write and perform said act of
kindness. Some woke up today knowing that they had made a personal difference in someone’s life.
Some have been class officers, club officers, or team captains. Some developed a deeper appreciation
for people of varying backgrounds and experiences by participating in programs like the Booker T.
Washington exchange or Dr. Stone’s “Voices from the Inside” elective.
As you look back on the 2013–2014 school year, noticing how much your children have grown physically
and mentally, also look at their character development and how much more confident and mature they
are, because of their experiences at RE. The Annual Fund supports the many wonderful experiences
that our children have, so even though it is the fourth quarter, don’t “throw in the towel.” Join our
community with a gift to the Annual Fund. All gifts are important and greatly appreciated!
