RE LOG Fall 2024
Raider Pride RE community members throng to Homecoming 2024 RE Sports The first Raider to take the field for Homecoming 2024 pounced aggressively on a loose football and nearly shredded it into little pieces. This “Raider” was a City of Miami police dog wearing a mini- Ransom Everglades football jersey. The German Shepherd had skipped out to the Robert E. Walker Field, tail wagging at high speed, and bounded after the ball. The dog’s playful spirit captured the tone at Homecoming 2024. As the enthusiastic canine left the field with his police handlers, the football Raiders arrived and gave the more than 1,600 attendees much to cheer with a resounding defeat of Pine Crest School, 37-7. Quarterback Niemann Lawrence ’28 led the Raiders with 15 of 19 passing for 251 yards and five touchdown passes to five different receivers: Colton Smith ’28, Finn McCarron ’28, Rauli Matos ’26, Juan Velazco ’26 and Reid Rosenberg ’25 . Earlier in the evening, the girls’ volleyball team earned a four-set victory over Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll in the Anderson gymnasium. During that contest, Addison Pollock ’25 accrued her 1000th dig and Julia Lewkowski ’25 tallied her 1,000th kill. In the stands were graduates of RE the volleyball program – Veronica Alcorta ’96, Lisa Sayfie ’91, Cathy Harrison Balestra ’90 and coach Penny Matthews. In between the digs and touchdowns, it was a night of fun, friendship and community. RE honored 75 years of Raider football with a short ceremony at halftime of the football game. Raider football alumni gathered near midfield to cheers; the group included RE hall of famer Bill Holly ’86 , current trustee Scott Srebnick ’83 , RE Director of Security Rob DePriest ’86 , RE Chief Operating Officer David Clark ’86 , RE Middle School Director of Athletics Thomas Willis ’04 and many others. The RE Dance Team entertained at halftime and Ella Arnold ’27 performed the National Anthem on electric guitar. Fans also enjoyed cuisine from an assortment of food trucks, cotton candy, and games on the new Raider courts next to the gymnasium. On the eve of Homecoming 2024, Ransom Everglades welcomed three extraordinary athletes – Fritz Alders ’74 (soccer), Bill Holly ’86 (football) and Debbie Ajagbe ’17 (track and field) – into the RE Athletic Hall of Fame with warm tributes and a spirited celebration at the Pagoda. All were introduced by current hall of famers: Alders by soccer coach Jim Beverley ’62 . Holly by former football star Matt Rose ’86 ; and Ajagbe by track and field coach Mike Becker, inducted to the hall of fame last year. 2024 RE Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
