So excited to have a job back in Miami despite living in Chicago. I also authored an article in the December issue of ArtForum.” 1982 Sally Ann Ramirez, see in Loving Memory Elena Marie Ramirez ’88 Tim Burks writes, “Greetings from the west coast … I don’t have a formal bucket list, at least not yet, but if I did, I would’ve crossed something off it last February – swimming with whales in the Dominican Republic, with an outfit called Conscious Breath Adventures, run by our own Gene Flipse. I was traveling with my wife, Claire, and three friends from college (and a few wives and brothers), and we all had a fantastic time. We boarded in Puerto Plata and motored 70 miles out to the Silver Bank, where the humpbacks return each year to give birth. The waters are protected by the Dominican government, and Gene has one of only three permits to be near the whales, so just being there is a privilege! “We started seeing whales as we approached the Silver Bank, right on cue, and then the fun really started. I thought ‘swim with whales’ meant floating in the water somewhere near whales, and there is some of that, but it also means swimming next to them, more than close enough to gaze into their eyes, yet just far enough away not to bother them. We also learned about and witnessed many surface behaviors, including fun terms like pec slaps and peduncle throws. It was amazing. Captain Gene and his crew are experts in all things whale and run a first-class operation. I was super happy L-R: Tim Burks and Gene Flipse
