SPRING 2025 Ransom Everglades LOG 39 All-girls math team wins regional Mathcounts competition An all-girls middle school math team from Ransom Everglades won the 2025 Miami Mathcounts competition hosted by the Florida Engineering Society on February 15, advancing to the state championship event in Daytona Beach. Ivy Chen ’30, Esha Nagalla ’29, Sofiya Dewan ’29 and Maya Lee Shonfeld ’30 came in first place in the overall competition and the ciphering round. The girls were set to compete in the 2025 Florida Mathcounts State Competition on March 14 (Pi Day) as this issue went to press, hoping to match or improve upon RE’s two straight second-place finishes there. Competing against 175 participants from 24 teams at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus, Chen placed second Upper school students advance to prestigious national math exam Nine Ransom Everglades students – Andrew Gedde ’25, Robert Li ’26, Daniel Li ’28, Solon Sun ’25, Gabriel Karsenti ’26, Minnie Zhou ’26, Joshie Khohayting ’28, Alex Tevelow ’28 and Aarav Jindal ’26 – were among the top-performing students in the nation on a recent set of math exams. The students excelled on the American Mathematics Competitions 10 or 12 (depending on their grade level), qualifying for the American Invitation Mathematics Examination (AIME) – a rare distinction earned by less than 5 percent of test takers. Girl Power AIMEing High The nine qualifiers to the AIME are believed to be the most ever for Ransom Everglades. “Qualifying for the AIME reflects not only exceptional mathematical ability but also dedication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills at a level that is nationally recognized,” said RE mathematics and computer science teacher Sebastian Revollo, upper school math team coach. “Documenting this accomplishment celebrates their excellence, inspires other students, and highlights RE’s commitment to supporting high achievers in mathematics.” If the students perform well on the AIME, they may advance to the next stage of the competition, the USA Mathematical Olympiad. More than 300,000 students take the AMC tests, and most are serious math students. individually; Shonfeld finished seventh; Nagalla, eighth; and Dewan, 15th. Their first-place team finish was the third straight title for Ransom Everglades in the Miami Mathcounts event. The students were coached by RE faculty member Ashley Ernst and Assistant Head of the Middle School Jessica Merrick. Ten other students represented RE at the event. Other top finishes included: Yifan Shen ’30 , 13th; Owen Zhao ’29 , 22nd; Sidney Schwartz ’29 , 28th; Axel Sirinyan ’29 , 32nd; Eve Kingdon ’29 , 34th.
