70 Ransom Everglades LOG SPRING 2024 Joe Mauro Over Joe Mauro’s 39 years at Ransom Everglades, he has served in many roles – teacher, coach, middle school athletic director, summer camp director, history and geography team sponsor, social sciences coordinator, middle school assistant director and more. When asked what experiences at RE stay with him to this day, he reflected: 1. “Being a principal player in RE initially adopting Summerbridge, now Breakthrough , a transformational educational program still hosted at Ransom Everglades. Breakthrough recently had its 30th anniversary here at RE! 2.“Being part of the team that started the sixth grade . We did everything from the ground up, letting the coordinators design their curriculum from scratch. This year is the 25th reunion of our first sixth grade! 3.“Our middle school history team winning the Middle School National History Bowl in 2023. This is an incredible achievement. [See story page 36] 4. “Coming to work every day for over the last 30 years at the middle school with great educators and people like John Lewis, Ginny Onorati, Don Kappelman, Greg Siegler and George Kasyan. The six of us had a remarkable run together. 5.“Former students reaching out to me with an email or letter. When a student wrote to me during the pandemic to say that he now has the time to realize the impact that my eighth-grade class from 20 years ago has had on him, that was pretty powerful and reaffirming.” Joe contributes to The Fund for Ransom Everglades as a volunteer leader and loyal donor, inspiring others to join him in giving back. He shared, “I was very fortunate to have great teachers and wonderful educational experiences in my life, and I just want to help give that same experience to as many people as I possibly can. The Fund for RE helps make educational opportunities possible for many deserving students.
