SPRING 2023 Ransom Everglades LOG 75 Linda Sawyer Frankel , former trustee, parent of alumni and grandparent of alumni, died on Jan. 18, 2023. She was 79. She was described by the Miami Herald as “a South Florida arts patron [who] held many titles throughout her 79 years of life: Vogue fashion editor, department store marketing head, philanthropist, private pilot, museum benefactor, mother, grandmother.” The Courier Journal in Louisville, Ky., called her a “role model: kind, caring, generous, brilliant and talented.” Frankel was born in 1943 and raised in Louisville. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts and met her future husband, David, in Boston, where he attended Harvard Business School. The couple later moved to New York City where Linda worked as an associate editor at Vogue . They moved to Miami in the early ’70s, and Linda worked as head of marketing for Burdines. She served as a trustee at Ransom Everglades from 1985 to 1992. Along with her husband, Linda financially supported Ransom Everglades and several South Florida arts organizations and museums, including The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, the Miami Book Fair, New World Symphony, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Miami City Ballet, and the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. She also supported the United Way. Linda also was active in the Sawyer Hayes Community Center, located in Louisville’s E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, which was named after her father. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, David Frankel; her sons, Davey Frankel ’88 (Jula) and Greg Frankel ’93 (Alexandra); her sister, Diane Sawyer; and her four grandchildren, June ’23, Vince ’28 , Ryder and Jasper ’27 .
