RE Log Spring 2023

72 Ransom Everglades LOG SPRING 2023 Pamela Vogt Dutcher E ’67 passed away from a sudden heart attack August 30, 2021, in Los Angeles, Calif. She was the second oldest daughter of Florence and David Dutcher of Coconut Grove, Fla. and attended St. Stephen’s School, Coconut Grove Elementary and Everglades School for Girls. She graduated from Palos Verdes High School in California, where the family had moved for a few years. Pam would know hardship early after developing late-stage schizophrenia after two years at Greensboro College in North Carolina. After beginning treatment, she was able to complete her associate’s degree in early childhood education at Metropolitan State University in Denver, where she had joined her sister, Darrow Dutcher Hodges E ’63 . She worked hard at part time jobs in childcare, combining retail and restaurant work to supplement income. When her illness progressed over the years, Pam lived in several supportive care facilities in California where she loved the year-round sunny weather. Pam was happiest when she was on outings in shopping areas and parks seeing children. She had loved Brownie and Girl Scout trips out in nature, sailing with her father on Biscayne Bay, slumber parties and family reunions with cousins in North Carolina and New York. She lived for many years at Canyon Trails Retirement home near Topanga Canyon, Calif. She stayed busy with facility activities and loved visiting the historic missions of California, her favorites being the San Fernando Mission and Ventura Mission. We will miss her funny laugh and quirky sense of humor. She lost her brother Douglas Vogt Dutcher ’80 many years ago and talked about her little brother every day. She would say “if anyone wants to make a gift for me, support Doug!” The Douglas Vogt Dutcher Scholarship for Equality and Diversity works to create initiatives at Ransom Everglades to assist the Miami community. Rod was born August 25, 1952, as the only son of Sheila (Case) Hill and Kent Hill of Greenwich. Rodney is survived by his parents; his two sons, Collin and Kyle; their mother, Beverly Hill; and his wife, Emma Alvero. Richard, also known as Rod, Roddo, Rockin-Rodney, Rod the Bod, and many other nicknames given by close friends, grew up spending time among homes in Savannah, Ga., at his beloved grandmother’s house, South Miami and Coconut Grove, and Fairfield County, Conn. From a young age, Rodney was a staple in the sailing and boating community. Having come from a long line of sailors on his father’s side, Rod grew up to be a well-respected 100-ton Master licensed captain as well as a successful yacht broker first working out of McMichael Yacht Yards and Brokers in Mamaroneck, N.Y., then onto Beacon Point Marine in Cos Cob, Conn., and later onto Total Marine in Norwalk, Conn. Rod was recognized as a top-three dealer in the nation for Pursuit boats for many years. Rodney sailed and captained many vessels up and down the east coast including sailboats which he raced with his many lifelong friends in races such as the 1980 SORC in Miami, the J24 nationals out of Key Biscayne, Fla., and many others. With his infectious laugh, sense of humor, and generosity, along with his huge heart and ever helpful and optimistic personality, Rod gained strong friendships and was loved everywhere he went. His absolute one-of-a-kind happy spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and befriended him. Rodney lived a happy, fruitful and fulfilled life with memories across the country.
