SPRING 2023 Ransom Everglades LOG 71 George Kasyan, see In Loving Memory Faculty Emeritus John Lewis became a grandfather. His daughter Sara Lewis ’09 , gave birth to daughter, Lyla Grace Cappello, 9 lbs., 3 oz. Barbara Lester recently visited with for- mer faculty members Joel Wallace and Jean Connelly. In Loving Memory Carleton A. Cleveland, Jr. AFS ’39 , passed away at the age of 99 on May 5, 2021, in Naples, Fla. Jeffrey Pettit AFS ’42 , age 95, died in his sleep at home on August 18, 2022, after living a long and fulfilling life based in New York City. An investment banker by trade, a lawyer by training, Jeffrey was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 55 years, Brigitte E. Pettit, and is survived by his twin daughters, Jennifer E. and Priscilla M. Pettit, and his grandsons, Otto Landesman and James and William Burton. Over many years, from the Adirondacks to Maine to Georgetown to Rumson, N.J., to New York City, Jeffrey delighted in his many friends, colleagues and family. An avid nature and bird lover, a talented squash player, an excellent chess and backgammon player, and the best dinner party conversationalist, his enthusiasm for knowledge, dictionaries and animated political discussions will be remembered for a very long time to come. His generosity, intelligence, contagious smile and deep kindness will always be with us. Former Faculty/ Administration Mary Lee Powell Brooks E ’62 passed away on October 30, 2022, in Stuart, Fla. She was born in Miami Beach, on February 11, 1944, the daughter of the late D. Lee Powell and Martha Buchanan Powell. She was a wonderful mother and was loved deeply by her family and friends. Mary Lee was a Walmart greeter in her community for many years. She never met a stranger and it felt like she knew everyone wherever she went. She was a member of the Southern Hills Christian Church. She is survived by her sister, Susan Powell, and her daughters, Lisa Hines (Tim) of Carrollton, Ga., and Jennifer Brooks of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and her grandchildren, Tim Hines, Jr. (Emily), Brooke Wade (Jay), Spencer Hines, Hunter Hines, and her seven great grandchildren.
