Shanté Haymore-Kearney writes, “2023 has started with amazing opportunities and experiences. I am so grateful and excited to see what else this year has in store! On January 7-8, 2023, I attended a Black history road trip throughout Central Florida named Teach the Truth Tour. We visited three historical sites and locations of racial violence, Mims, Newberry and Rosewood, Fla. The group was composed of local youth students and their guardians, educators and community members. I was so happy to see that two current Ransom Everglades and Breakthrough Miami students were also tour participants. The trip’s highlight was the Rosewood Remembrance Ceremony, an event that honored the Rosewood Massacre of 1923 – a racially motivated attack that destroyed the town and killed six black men 100 years ago. The tour was a powerful experiential learning experience that bridged the gap of the past, present and future while honoring the pain and promise of Black and American history in Florida.” To learn more visit: http://bit.ly/3jfIhXY Ruben Millares and Antonia Wright won the Juror’s Choice Award at Miami Beach’s No Vacancy, a juried art competition that supports and celebrates mainly local artists, provokes critical discourse, and encourages the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as temporary art destinations in their own right. This year was the largest to date, with an expanded program presenting 12 artists creating site-specific works at 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels. Patria y Vida is a large-scale sculpture which was installed on the beach outside the Faena Hotel Miami Beach and celebrated people’s right to peacefully protest by using the barricade as a symbol of global resistance. For No Vacancy , the artists recreated the activist gesture from the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, where protestors subverted the use of barricades, set out by police, and repurposed them to create an insurgent structure for their own protection. After attending medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, he completed his general surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital. During his training he obtained a master’s in public health with a focus in biostatistics at the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Bloomberg Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Pedroso’s clinical interests include general pediatric surgery, surgical oncology and thoracic surgery. His clinical focus is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy in children. We are so happy to have Felipe back in Miami with his wife, brothers and parents.
