RE Log Spring 2023
SPRING 2023 Ransom Everglades LOG 61 Julie Greenwald Friedland writes, “On my first day of practice as a fresh- man, Coach Shandor asked for someone to volunteer as a goalie. I volunteered, thinking someone else would replace me the next time. Unfortunately, no one wanted the job. In my first season, I struggled with treading water and being unable to block even simple shots. Even at my lowest, most stressful moments, he spoke to me as if what was asked was achievable and a natural progression of my abilities. I don’t recall him yelling or showing frustration with me or any one of my teammates. He convinced me I was capable when everything else showed me I was not. “Three years later, through his initia- tive, we had the fantastic luck of playing water polo in Germany for a summer with most of our team. I can talk about how this trip helped me get to know my teammates since we never hung out during the regular school season, but what continues to resonate for me are the moments I shared with him during that trip. One night we had dinner at a Greek restaurant with some new locals we had befriended. This was the first time an adult not related to my family wanted my company and seemed to enjoy it. “I did not appreciate it then. It has taken many years to fully reflect on my relationship with Bill to value that he always treated us as individuals, not just as kids.” Please see In Loving Memory for more information about Bill Shandor. Lisa Sayfie writes, “Coach Shandor helped us win the first ever state volleyball championship for Ransom Everglades. His positive encouragement along with Coach Matthews changed the course of RE volleyball.” 1992 Class Agents: Daniel Finkle (dfinkle@htk.com) , Alexandra Lesser ( ali.lesser@gmail.com ) David Candib was recently promoted to Vice President of Port Operations at Carnival Corporation.
