RE Log Spring 2023
SPRING 2023 Ransom Everglades LOG 55 From Joanna Rago , “I was so touched when Alice Greenfield’s son, Alex, contacted me in April 2022 to arrange a visit to Loveland to see his mother’s ‘old’ friend of nearly 50 years! I hadn’t seen Alex since he was an infant, 26 years earlier. It was a delight to meet him and his girlfriend, May, and as I looked across the table at this young man, it felt like his mother and grandmother (Ruth Greenfield) were there, too…” Joanna Rago and Alex Greenfield 1977 Please consider becoming a class agent. George Metcalfe writes, “Living in the Vero Beach area, my wife, Leti, and I opened a new law office in Miami to be an active granddad. Doing more fishing and enjoying cigars. Will be visiting Steve Potter ’77 at his place in Anchorage later this year.” Leslie Miller Saiontz founded Achieve Miami in 2015 with the goal of launch- ing, scaling and developing programs that narrow the opportunity gaps facing low-income communities in Miami. Achieve Miami’s new initiative, the Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP), was recently launched in tandem with the University of Miami and Teach For America. TAP is setting out to solve the teacher shortage affecting schools in Miami and across the U.S. by creating a path to a career in education for graduat- ing college students. Starting this spring, seniors at the University of Miami who complete a one-semester course and a paid summer internship will be guaran- teed teaching positions with Miami-Dade County Public Schools upon graduation. “Our goal is to place 50 new fabulous young teachers in Miami classrooms this fall and we’re already in discussions with other universities interested in expanding TAP nationally,” Leslie said. “By opening young adults’ eyes to the benefits of a career in education, we have the potential to develop a new generation of teach- ers while eliminating the learning gaps that have become too prevalent in our schools.” Photo above, L-R: Laura Kohn-Wood, dean of education at the University of Miami; Leslie Miller Saiontz , founder of Achieve Miami; and Jasmine Calin- Micek, director of programming for the Teacher Accelerator Program.
