RE Log - Fall 2023

From the Archives 80 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2023 One of the goals of the RE Archives is to find new ways to share the school’s history. During 2022-23, many new projects added impetus to that continual goal. An exciting one was initiated by the History of RE Club, which is a student activity sponsored by the archivist. Enthused by a walk-through of the newly-opened La Brisa, the club suggested they lead tours of the house for upper school students during the lunch breaks. They started in the second semester. Armed with historical photos of La Brisa, kindly donated by Juliana Field ’72 , the club members provided a narrative of the property’s history and its connection to Paul Ransom as they led students from room to room. Tours are planned to continue this year with suggestions from the club to include the Pagoda and the Ransom Cottage. Additionally, the club will continue to publish articles in The Catalyst (the student newspaper), create displays about the school’s history in the Ansin Breezeway, and develop other projects. Faculty are also partners in sharing the school’s history with the students. In March, Ariel Mandel’s senior elective class, Poetry and Fiction, worked on a project to celebrate the upper school’s natural beauty via poetry for the following month’s National Poetry Month event. The students adopted green spaces on campus and created “video invitations” which included historical information. The class then visited the archives to research documents and photographs. The Women Empowerment Club, sponsored by faculty member Jenny Carson ’03 , honored the Everglades School for Girls during an assembly in March. Three club members added spirit by modeling the school’s uniforms which were loaned by the archives. RE-energization is a team effort and with a new school year recently underway the RE Archives looks forward to continued collaboration with everyone in order to provide “fresh vitality, RE-energizing the Sharing of RE’s History By Katrina Patchett, Director of Libraries and Archivist La Brisa, view from the front, c1949-54, courtesy of Juliana Field ’72 Women Empowerment Club members model Everglades School for Girls uniforms, March 2023 Re-en·er·gize – a verb meaning “give fresh vitality, enthusiasm, or impetus to” ( Oxford English Dictionary , oed.com)
