RE Log - Fall 2022
84 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2022 Class Notes Ben Rosenthal and Adrienne Boris produced Nighttown , a new chamber opera that had its world-premiere livestream and in-person event in Boston in March. The piece was mentored by Russell Rymer, professor Luke Menand and composer Jonathan Dove, and in addition to being a highly accessible and emotion-driven reimagining of Joyce’s Ulysses (which turns 100 this year!), it is also a work strongly about representation and inclusion across the gender spectrum — both in gender-expansive role- writing and voice-type-based casting, irrespective of singers’ gender — as highlighted by a recent feature in The Boston Globe. The piece has received further features in the Harvard Gazette, Broadway World and OperaWire . 2019 Class Agents: Wesley Cusack (wescusack5@gmail.com ), Gregori Estime (gregestime@icloud.com) , Aliya Hollub (aliyahollub@gmail.com) , Lily Karson (lilykarson@gmail.com ), Maggie McDowell (maggiemcdow3@gmail.com ), Alex Mendelson (alexjmendelson@gmail.com ), Anderson Murphy (acm06@me.com) , Abigail Roberts (abbierobe@comcast.net ), Jake Schwartz (jakeschwartz222@icloud.com ), Calliste Skouras (callisteskouras@mac.com ) Greg Estime , see Class of 2018 Zachary Vuong writes, “Breakthrough Miami enters its fourth decade. Asher and Harley created the organization, Students for Naloxone, along with friend, Genna Grodin (Miami Beach High) in 2019. The students worked to gather data, interview doc- tors, nurses, and first responders, and met with lawmakers in an effort to make it legal for schools around the state of Florida to stock the anti-overdose drug, Naloxone. Asher, Harley and Genna even traveled to Tallahassee to fight for the bill that their efforts inspired. Senator Jason Pizzo remained a strong and dedicated advocate of the cause and after two failed attempts for a stand-alone law, Senator Pizzo switched strategies and added a school-related Naloxone amendment to a larger drug prevention bill that recently passed unanimously. At the conclusion of the vote, Senator Pizzo took time to acknowledge Asher, Harley and Genna on the Senate floor. Asher is now a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, Harley, a junior at Cornell, and Genna is a junior at the University of Florida.
