RE Log - Fall 2022

FALL 2022 Ransom Everglades LOG 45 Cultivating Inclusion and Belonging Through student programming and the work of the Anti-Racism Task Force, Ransom Everglades is creating opportunities for the RE community to strengthen its culture of belonging. • RE Community Events: The Office of Inclusion and Community Engagement hosted several events throughout the year for Black students, parents, faculty and alumni to encourage connection and camaraderie. • House System: Launched in the middle school during the 2021-22 school year, the house system encourages school spirit, friendly competition and new traditions. Drawing inspiration from Ransom Everglades’ history, the houses each have a name, origin story, bird and color. Students and faculty expanded the house system to the upper school in 2022-23. • The Greater Miami Community: To celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, faculty and students participated in a host of activities. In collaboration with AKA Sorority, the RE community came together to make dresses and shirts for Haitian boys and girls. Middle schoolers collected toiletries which were delivered to a local homeless shelter, and students made balls of plastic yarn to create mats for the unhoused. The service day culminated in a clean-up of the mangroves. In 2021-22, RE invested $240,000 in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives – and $7.4 million in financial aid and tuition remission. REinvention in Action Last year, RE marked the successful conclusion of the REinventing Excellence campaign – which raised $82.3 million in six years. • STEM Center Open House: A long- awaited open house showcased the new Constance & Miguel Fernandez STEM Center during Alumni Weekend 2022. Guided by an interactive map designed by students, guests to the center received an insider’s look at how the building has enhanced learning, interdisciplinary work and collaboration since it opened in August 2020. See page 56. • La Brisa: The architecturally significant La Brisa house offers an inviting reception space for campus visitors and brings together the school’s administrative core. The La Brisa grounds nearly double the school’s acreage, allowing room for additional water views, a new quad and meeting areas. See page 12. • Humanities: Complementing the magnificent new STEM center, a planned new humanities building on the upper school campus will create a new home for English, history and social sciences at Ransom Everglades. A record gift from Brett and Daniel Sundheim will help make this new facility a reality. See page 57 for more information about the Sundheim’s transformational gift. In 2021-22, RE invested $3.2 million in facilities, including new construction.
