RE Log - Fall 2022
44 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2022 Student Life and Learning Following a nearly 120-year tradition of experiential learning, Ransom Everglades students learn by doing. • Everglades & North Carolina Excursion: Members of the Classes of 2024 and 2025 enjoyed outdoor experiences in the Everglades and North Carolina this year. These excursions provided “much-needed bonding time, allowing students to make new friends and experience peaceful time out in nature,” reflected Brandon King and Adriana Sanchez, deans of the sophomore class. • TeamBuildr: The Athletics Department introduced TeamBuildr, an online strength and conditioning platform. The app has expanded opportunities and accessibility for training RE student-athletes, in conjunction with in-person coaching. • Art, Design and Technology Class: An example of interdisciplinary study at work, the new Art, Design and Technology class at RE “gives students new tools to unleash their creativity,” wrote Catalyst staff writer Sol Cuello Robert ’22 . Led by photography teacher Matt Stock and engineering teacher Robert DuBard, the course offered students the opportunity to use the makerspace in the Constance & Miguel Fernandez STEM Center. In 2021-22, RE invested $16.2 million in instructional programs. Students and faculty are exploring, growing and building community. STORIES OF IMPACT Faculty Professional Development Whether on our faculty for 60 years or six, Ransom Everglades teachers understand the power they have to transform students’ lives. • Announcing Faculty Endowed Chairs: During an end-of-year celebration in June 2022, Associate Head of School John A. King Jr. announced recipients of two prestigious endowed teaching chairs: Kathryn Bufkin was awarded the inaugural Dan Leslie Bowden English Endowed Chair; and Mike Becker was named the first Ann Goesel Mathematics Chair. Donors established these chairs in honor of two of RE’s most celebrated former faculty members. See page 35. • Developing the Middle School Team: The middle school leadership team accompanied incoming Head of the Middle School Eric Boberg to the Lovett School in April for the “Leadership Lab.” With a new model of class deans introduced to the middle school in 2021-22, this opportunity was timely for our middle school administration. • Honoring Faculty Emeriti: Recognizing faculty who retire from RE after 25 or more years of service, the faculty emeriti program honors legendary faculty in this group. Each issue of the Alumni Newsletter includes an interview with a faculty emeritus. Visit www.ransomeverglades.org/news-and- events/publications to read past issues and see page 35 to read about our newest faculty emerita, Bobbie Bassuk. In 2021-22, RE invested $255,000 in professional growth.
