FALL 2022 Ransom Everglades LOG 39 RE sweeps Scholar Athlete of the Year awards Ransom Everglades student-athletes Juan Rivera ’22 and Sabrina Shipley ’22 were named 2021- 22 Miami-Dade Scholar Athletes of the Year. Rivera, now a freshman on the soccer team at Haverford College, is a defensive midfielder who helped lead the Raiders to a runner- up finish in the state. Shipley, who is playing water polo for Brown University, was also named to the Florida High School Athletic Association’s 28th Annual Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team. Ransom Everglades’ junior quad of Ana Cecilia Gonzalez ’23, Kathryn Serra ’23, Ysa Jadotte ’23 and Isa Leiser ’23 won a state championship at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Sculling Championships in Sarasota on April 9-10 as Thomas Segrera ’23 claimed runner-up honors in the boys’ varsity single event. It was the second straight title for Serra, who helped RE win the junior double in 2021. Ransom Everglades sent 19 athletes in six events to compete in the state championship, which drew 381 athletes at various levels from 39 clubs and teams statewide. The girls quad finished 10th overall in the junior quad event and first among scholastic entries. Segrera claimed sixth overall in the varsity single, finishing second among schools. The team was led by coach Richie Fredericks. RE inducts four to Athletic Hall of Fame Ransom Everglades welcomed L.B. Irigoyen ’12, Kevin Grossfeld ’95, Jonathan “Joner” Strauss ’00 and Carrie Walpole ’96 to the Ransom Everglades Athletic Hall of Fame on April 21, celebrating with a lively evening at the Pagoda that included friends, RE administrators and former teachers, coaches and hall of fame members. The event, held in honor of departed coach and faculty member Mike Stokes, included RE hall of famers Penny Matthews, Don Kappelman, Amy Sayfie Zichella ’93, Lisa Sayfie ’91, Jim Beverley ’62, David Clark ’86, Jessica Greenwald Ladin ’93, Gordon Myers ’92 and Julie Greenwald Friedland ’91 . Irigoyen won individual and team state championships in cross country at RE and went on to the University of Miami. He was described by former coach Mike Becker, whom he met on the middle school cross country team, as passionate, team-oriented and inspiring. Irigoyen is now a pulmonary physiologist at Baptist Health. Grossfeld, who was introduced by former classmate Miguel Dueñas ’95 , led RE to its first district championship in baseball before heading to the University of Miami. Now a partner at Saul, Ewing, Arnstein & Lehr, Grossfeld helps coach RE’s middle school team, which includes his son Tyler Grossfeld ’27 , and has also served as alumni class rep and co-chair of the Ransom Everglades Epic Fishing tournament (REEF). Strauss, an all-county honoree in swimming and water polo, was introduced by his father Robert Strauss, a former RE swim coach who represented Mexico in the 1972 Olympics. Now the founder and chief executive officer of SkateBird Miami, Joner Strauss swam at the University of Florida before becoming an entrepreneur in the adventure sports realm. Walpole, a stellar pitcher who played in the Little League Softball World Series, continued her softball career at Villanova University, where she threw three no-hitters while playing alongside current RE softball coach Melissa Dusharm. Now a senior vice president of client services at BDG Media, Walpole was introduced by former classmate Kimberly Arbuckle Goodwin ’96 .
