Not only were none of this year’s team members born yet, it was a time when Miami, the country and the world were a different place. Bill Clinton was president, Lady Diana was still in the news, and the Mars Pathfinder was just landing on Mars. The RE head of school was John Cotton. From 1997 through 2021, the boys’ track and field team rarely even managed to finish in the top half of the standings even while the girls’ team routinely excelled. That all changed abruptly with an exceptional group of athletes and the perfect attitude. Hungry to achieve after a frustrating pandemic, the team coalesced around a small but powerful group of runners and jumpers. The biggest star for this past year’s team was David “Chuli” Serra ’24 . In his first year of track and field, Serra won 13 out of 14 races in South Florida, was a double champion in the 800- and 1600-meter races at both the district and regional level, and ran a time of 1 minute, 52 seconds in the 800, breaking the legendary record of Bill Convey ’83 from1983. Serra finished the season ranked as third fastest in the 800 among sophomores in the United States. The highest state scorer was Eli Goldman ’22 , now competing for Washington University at St. Louis. Goldman was nearly undefeated in the high jump, and his 6 feet, 4 inch jump was the second best in more than 60 years of the RE track and field history. Goldman’s finest moment occurred at the Florida state championships in Gainesville, where he placed fourth. The third member of this outstanding group of athletes was Aidan Rothstein ’22 , now on the track and field team at Johns Hopkins University. Rothstein repeated as district champion, finished ninth in the state and, by vaulting nearly 13 feet, became Ransom Everglades’ best vaulter since 1972. Caleb Carlson’22 , a football recruit for Wake Forest University, was another first-time track and field athlete at RE. He won the district title in the 300-meter hurdles and placed 10th at the state championships. Antonio Pedro de Macedo ’24 also contributed; his time of 50 seconds in the 400 scored important points for RE in the district meet and ranked him among the top sophomores in all of Florida. Rounding out the big-time scorers were Luca Campiani ’22 and Alex Tacher Lois ’22 . Campiani, who had never competed in organized sports before 2020, placed in two hurdle events at the district championships and also became the first from RE in more than 20 years to win the 110 meter hurdles. Tacher not only won a title in the long jump, but he also became the first RE athlete in 20 years to score in three individual events at the district meet. The 2022 boys’ track and field team set the bar for future teams and, with two of these athletes returning, looks forward to the 2023 season.
