RE Log Spring 2021

SPRING 2021 Ransom Everglades LOG 77 Paul Carlton Ransom traveled to the wilderness of South Florida in 1893 to seek the subtropical warmth and improve his health. He arrived in Coconut Grove, a new frontier on the shores of Biscayne Bay where, enthralled by the natural beauty and diverse peoples, he decided to purchase a stretch of land on the waterfront. Three years later, he built Pine Knot Camp on the property and started tutoring. Here are three artifacts relating to the Pine Knot Camp era, and two photographs from Ransom’s album. From the RE Archives photo above Honeymoon and Jungalow Cottages, 1898 photo left Paul and Alice Ransom with Kirk Munroe and student F.W. Bird, 1897. Ransom bought his land from Kirk Munroe who lived next door in “Scrububs.” In 2016, Ransom Everglades purchased “La Brisa” which is the subsequent name of Munroe’s property.
