RE Log Spring 2021

SPRING 2021 Ransom Everglades LOG 61 1984 Class Agent: Eliot Gelber ( egelber@msn.com ) 1985 Class Agent: Stacey Deutsch Shoer (shoerstacey@gmail.com) Kelly Capen Douglas , President and CEO for Voices for Children, Inc., hosted a Real Word Reunion Speakers Panel on November 17, 2020, featuring panelists who reflected on their time in foster care, how foster care shaped their lives, and the ways in which their Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) impacted their lives. The special panel was in honor of Voices for Children’s 40th year of service in San Diego County. The alumni panelists each offered a fresh, honest perspective on the ways in which their experiences in foster care and with CASA volunteers affected their journeys into adulthood, parenthood and careers. To make this event even more special, it was hosted by Emmy-winning journalist and co-founder of OZY media, Carlos Watson ’87 . Fellow RE friends and former schoolmates were able to participate virtually. One very special guest was Faculty Emeritus Mike Stokes. Kelly is photographed on the bottom right and Carlos on the top left. Ramon Rodriguez , see In Loving Memory 1986 Class Agents: Pam Pennell Kelly ( pamela@kellyart.com) , Lissette Suarez Stancioff ( lissettestancioff@gmail.com ) Pam Pennell Kelly writes, “Our daughter, Evie, is enjoying being a freshman at the University of Florida, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Fortunately our son, Addis, who is a junior at Oak Hall School, has been able to attend school in person. We sadly lost two of our pets this year: our cat, Elsa, and our dog, Bucky. We miss them very much! We are looking forward to a new year and wish everyone health, happiness and unity!” 1983 Class Agent: Bill Bailey (bill@baileyrealestateconsulting.com ) Bill Bailey writes, “The pandemic brought us classmates together, includ- ing some classmates who have not been in touch with one another for many years. A random email was sent over the summer to a few, and it grew from there. Unfortunately, we did not have everyone. Please send me your email address, and I will update your information. Email me at bill@baileyrealestateconsulting.com. While most of our class is doing well, we are all saddened about the broader im- pacts of the pandemic. For me, only my business is affected with the family being healthy, thankfully. Our kids came home from college in March and were back on campus by August. We just finished the holidays with everyone (all four of us) at home. It was quiet and intimate. I am happy and proud to see what RE has done in the community to help others.” Kate Shaw Patterson , see Lisa Shaw ’77 Scott Tornek lives in Wilmington, Del., heretofore vaguely recognized as a small city somewhere along the I-95 corridor, now forever famous as the 46th President’s hometown, with his wife, Alex Tornek ’86, and daughter Kaely, a junior at Wilmington Friends School. Son Matt is graduating from Penn this year. Scott serves as the Chief Strategy Officer at Penn Medicine’s Center for Community Health Workers, where he has grown an evidence-based health equity model for high-risk patients in Philadelphia into a national business (chw.upenn.edu ). Alex is the President of Tornek Design Associates (www.tornek- design.com) , where she helps compa- nies in a variety of industries evolve their visual communications, branding and marketing collateral. The Torneks have chosen not to submit a photo of themselves because, after 11 months of quarantining, there’s not much they want you to see. Janet Wu who still lives in the Boston area writes, “I am an anchor for Bloomberg now, and I love it.”
