We rented a house on the beach of the Florida panhandle, driving from our respective homes in Miami, Denton (Texas) and Chicago with our families after following careful COVID-19 protocols. We look forward to seeing each other this summer and wish everyone a happy, healthy and sane 2021.” Fred Frates writes, “Fortunately human viruses don’t affect my seasonal life here in the forests of the Florida panhandle. Summer gardens are followed by firewood collection and usually move into prescribed burning, but this fall I experienced a true wonder. Through local contacts, I participated in cane syrup production at the pioneer level, which unbeknownst to me has been tradition in this area. Cutting, stripping, crushing and cooking several varieties of sugarcane resulted in a dark brown syrup that spoils the taste buds.” Matthew Reischer writes, “I am married with two teenage daughters. One is a high school junior, and the other is applying to colleges and will study flute and computer science or engineering. We live in New Jersey, near Philadelphia. I recently changed careers (again), and I have been teaching high school physics since 2018. I also started a robotics team for the school. Previously, I owned and operated a Toyota dealership, retired for a while, and then started an energy consulting business.” Matthew is photographed below with his daughters at a robotics championship in 2018.
