RE Log Spring 2021

SPRING 2021 Ransom Everglades LOG 51 Class Notes Adirondack-Florida School 1934 Emilio Sanchez (deceased) is the first Cuban American visual artist to be recognized by the U.S. Postal Service with a pane of Forever stamps. The stamps will be launched in the summer of 2021 for the centennial anniversary of the artist. “The art of Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) is celebrated with four new stamps featuring his colorful architec- tural lithographs and painting: ‘Los Toldos’ (1973), ‘Ty’s Place’ (1976), ‘En el Souk’ (1972) and Untitled ( Ventanita Entreabierta ) (1981),” USPS stated in a news release. “Sanchez explored the effects of light and shadow to emphasize the abstract geometry of his subjects. His artwork encompasses his Cuban heritage as well as his long life in New York City. Antonio Alcalá served as art director and designer for this pane of 20 stamps.” The portrait of Sanchez is by Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte. Victor Deupi’s book, Emilio Sanchez in New York and Latin America , was pub- lished in July 2020. The book focuses on the life and artistic activities of Emilio Sanchez in New York and Latin America in the 1940s and 1950s. More specifi- cally, it considers Sanchez in the wider context of mid-century Cuban artists and cross-cultural exchange among New York, Cuba and the Caribbean. The book covers a wide breadth of material around Sanchez’s life and will appeal to schol- ars in modern art, Caribbean studies, architectural his- tory and Latin American and Hispanic studies. In my mind, this was going to be a one-year gig while I finished my law school work and bar exam before entering full-time practice in international and Latin American law. Hah! I have taught and coached full-time for 40 years and the last 10 part-time, mostly at RE. I tried twice to go the law or headmaster route, but sage advice and counsel from the great man himself, Dan Leslie Bowden, and long-ago companion John Bell, kept me where I needed to be: in the class- room and on the pitch (that is, field, in the soccer world). This year I am again on the field by the bay, assisting my former player David Villano ’79 , who has been the award-winning head soccer coach for more than 30 years, and his crew of six generations of RE alums and children of former players. This year also marks the 66th year since I arrived on the all-wooden campus of Ransom with fewer than 125 students, with many day students and some students boarding in the Pagoda. The grades were called forms then, as was the English and prep school tradition. The whole school was divided into Greens and Whites, who competed all year in academics, sports, and activities for a valued trophy. I was White, a designation as important as 1967 Please consider becoming a class agent. your name, grade and age. I welcome any others from the ’50s and ’60s to share their tales of Ransom back in the day – Saturday work squad, paddling in Head’s office, sneaking into the Grove, a preteen hideaway under the Pagoda and Bowden’s apartment, dances with Ms. Harris’s School and so much more.” Pictured above (L-R): Buddy Corlett ’07, Michiel “Monkey” van de Kreeke ’88, David Villano ’79, Jim Beverley and Emerson Fales ’86 on the sidelines as the boys’ soccer team won its first district title since 2016 at Walker field in February. 1963 Please consider becoming a class agent. 1964 Class Agent: Lawrence Reeder (larry@howardsreederinc.com ) 1965 Class Agents: James Hobbs (jchobbs3@bellsouth.net ), Kurt Kunzel (kkunzel5@gmail.com ), Joseph Sanders (sandersmarketing@ mindspring.com ) 1966 Please consider becoming a class agent.
