RE Log - Fall 2021

FALL 2021 Ransom Everglades LOG 45 S hane Battier is a firm believer in the value of education. “Education is the genuine skeleton key to unlocking potential,” Battier reflected this summer. “It is my belief that by providing adequate educational opportunities for others, we will be able to effect meaningful generational change in our underserved neighborhoods. That is one of my key objectives in life.” A six-time NBA Sportsmanship Award winner who is also recognized for his exceptional character and commitment to community work, Battier and his wife, Heidi, formed The Battier Take Charge Foundation in 2010. The foundation has awarded over $2.3 million in college scholarships since its inception – and delivered dynamic programming and academic resources for underserved yet driven young scholars. As a part of REinventing Excellence: The Campaign for Ransom Everglades , the Battiers also chose to make commitments to both financial aid and diversity, equity and inclusion. Both have been inspired by their experience as parents at RE: “Heidi and I wanted to create an environment where Zeke ’26 could develop a passion for learning and growth.” Battier said, “It’s difficult to speak with a staff member or a student without getting the impression that everyone involved with Ransom Everglades wants to make a positive difference in the world.” On the subject of DEI, he said, “I am thrilled about the commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We live in an increasingly diverse world and our children will need to understand how to navigate it ... DEI indicates that people of all backgrounds and experiences can receive equal treatment, access, opportunity and advancement while having their voices heard and respected. What a noble objective to strive for in whatever we do.” Reflecting on his own journey, Battier underscored his desire to pay it forward. “Without the possibilities provided by others, I would not have been able to pursue my aspirations, no way,” he said. “Not everyone has the resources or connections to help them achieve their goals. I wish to provide opportunities for others through philanthropy and outreach ... When the offspring of the young people we assist continue to ‘pay it forward’ in the name of community, I will have accomplished my life ambitions.” For more on Shane Battier, newly appointed trustee, see page 34.
