RE Log - Fall 2020

68 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2020 Mark Handforth, a Coconut Grove resident, sculptor of international renown and father of Juno ’21 and Violet ’18, was commissioned to produce art for the quad between the new STEM center and the Visual Arts Building. The piece will be placed this fall. We asked the artist to share insight into his work, The Ringing Rock. “In creating this sculpture for Ransom Everglades, I have tried to speak first and foremost to the students who, to my mind, are the primary audience; and sought to engage them in an activity that could become a kind of tradition. Much like the wonderful cannon in the quad, I envision the ringing of a bell to celebrate a victory or mark time, to signify beginnings and ends. The sculpture embraces the vernacular of the school, its history and symbols as well as the vernacular of Coconut Grove, both geologic and funky. The Ringing Rock is a kind of collage of these elements, a kind of concrete poetry or a haiku of things. The rock, an enormous oolitic limestone boulder is a marker of our very particular geologic position on the limestone ridge, a time capsule of reef organisms. Improbably looped through the rock is a massive saffron yellow ring, a formal pop element, as inorganic in its nature as the rock is organic, a fundamental dialectic on the confluence of abstract geometry and nature as ready-made. Suspended from the tilted ring is a tuned ship’s bell, rung with a hand clapper by students, by faculty, by alumni and visitors. The sound element extends the physical sculpture into the realm of the intangible, to sound waves and the cathartic joy of ringing a bell.” – Mark Handforth Head of School Penny Townsend invites you to attend Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24* save the dates Celebrating Everglades 1970 and 1971 ▪ Ransom 1961, 1970 and 1971 ▪ RE 1976, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001 Join REconnect for the most up-to-date reunion information: www.REalumniconnect.org Or contact the Office of Alumni Relations Vicki Carbonell Williamson ’88 | 305 460 8826 | vwilliamson@ransomeverglades.org Stacey Chopp | 305 781 2061 | schopp@ransomeverglades.org ALUMNI WEEKEND 2021 *A determination of whether Reunion 2021 will be virtual or in-person will be announced by February 1, 2021.
