RE Log Spring 2019
SPRING 2019 Ransom Everglades LOG 55 Sam Chaneles was highlighted in Georgia Tech’s alumni magazine in a story by Steve Norris for his interest in mountaineering. Sam has been leading expeditions for Georgia Tech students throughout the world, and ventur- ing out on his own. The story reports that he scaled Washington’s Mt. Baker, California’s Mt. Shasta and Mexico’s Iztaccihuatl; traveled with his father to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro; and hiked solo 40 days across Colorado using an oversized Georgia Tech flag as his groundsheet for setting up his camp. The mechanical engineering major explained his passion: “For the climbing commu- nity, it’s how we recharge our batteries and how we connect with people.” 2018 Class Agents: Erin Bakes (embakes@gmail.com ), Ava Dimond (avadiamond@gmail.com ), Catherine Kolski (ckolski22@hotmail.com ), Florence Hawkins (florencehawkins99@gmail.com) , Kathleen Hutchinson (Kathleenhutch99@gmail.com ), Paulina Pages (pip11@miami.edu ), Ben Rosenthal (brosenthal@college.harvard.edu ), Ryan Sears (rsear314@gmail.com) Kathleen Hutchinson is a member of Wake Forest University’s student ambas- sadors in admissions program, which al- lows her to be a resource for current RE students who have any questions about Wake Forest. The goal of this program is for the ambassadors to coordinate with the college counselors informal visits to their high schools, and answer any ques- tions prospective applicants may have. Noa Richard was named a Barack Obama Scholar in September 2018 by Occidental College, an honor that recognizes her as an exceptional student commit- ted to the public good in keeping with the principles advanced by the liberal arts college’s best-known alumnus. As an inaugural Obama Scholar, she received a four-year scholarship that met the entire cost of her education in addition to sum- mer enrichment programs and access to the program’s advisory council. “Noa was selected for her kindness, her creativity and her sensitivity to issues of social and environmental injustice,” says Wendy Sternberg, Occidental’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College. “Noa has found her passion and voice with social causes, activism and volunteerism. She is a compassionate, intellectual activist—an amazing young woman.” Noa is interested in becoming a writer and journalist and in pursuing the critical theory and social justice major at Occidental. At RE she created, directed and filmed a documentary, “Syrian Shawn Harvey and Tucker Weed ’18 have been sailing together since elemen- tary school and now again, although for different schools, Yale and Brown, re- spectively. They are pictured here at the Hatch Brown Memorial Trophy regatta hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (At the same time, former RE sailing teammate, Maddie Sharp ’18 , was making her college sailing debut for Dartmouth at the Nicholas Barnett Trophy regatta hosted by Bowdoin.) Shawn and Tucker also sailed against each other at the Harry H. Anderson, Jr. Regatta hosted at Yale earlier in the season. How appropriate that they would first meet up on the college racing circuit at the Harry Anderson (’38) regatta! The fall season is over, but these two, along with Maddie, will meet up again in the spring. Gabriel Paniagua is a proud member of the Princeton soccer team, the 2018 Ivy League champs!
