RE Log Spring 2019
SPRING 2019 Ransom Everglades LOG 53 Najib Wahab writes, “I will be gradu- ating in June of this year from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. I hope to be coming back to Miami to work at Related Group as a Developers Associate. The MBA pro- gram was very fun and enriching and I definitely recommend it for anyone who is trying to pivot or is unsure of the next step.” 2011 Class Agents: Luz Stella Perez de Corcho (puzstellapdc@gmail.com) , Victoria Collazo (victoriacollazo@gmail.com ) William Hector writes, “I’m immensely honored to be awarded support from the Knight Foundation to produce G7:2070 , an immersive theatrical summit where audience members are invited to become delegates and join the dignitaries of the seven most powerful nations — The U.S., The Northern European Union, The Papal Federation of Southern Europe, Imperial China, Uruguay, Russia, and Disney — as they gather in a post-sea level rise Miami to decide the fate of the world. The inspiration for G7:2070 grew out of the tremendous opportunity I had to work on ‘ESTATE,’ a collab- orative immersive play staged at The Deering Estate, written by me and my fellow writers in the Miami-Dade County Playwright Development Program, including my colleague, close friend and RE alumna Stephanie Ansin ’90 . The idea of immersive theater – to break the barrier between audience and actor, and to activate non-traditional space as fertile ground for narratives — seems particu- larly suited to a city of events and parties like Miami, and the combination of poli- tics, humor and history that comprise the story definitely saw its initial seed form in my time at RE, under the tutelage of amazing faculty like Greg Cooper, Josh Stone and Jen Nero. I had the chance to do drama at RE right from my first day in the seventh grade, all the way to our final senior directing projects, organized by Sean Paul Bryan, all of which inspired my studies and work at UM, and the writing I’ve done and hope to do.” Brad Vogel writes, “I will be getting married in April to Alexis Paz in Austin, Tex. Recently moved out to Houston for an amazing job with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Orthopedics and Sports Medicine as a Physical Therapist.” 2012 Class Agent: Marli Scharlin ( scharlins@gmail.com ) Briana Ruiz Christophers wrote “I received my first white coat – the symbol for starting on my path at the Tri- Institutional Medical Scientist Training Program at Weill Cornell Medicine as a future physician scientist! I am forever grateful for this opportunity to earn my MD-PhD and am looking forward to growing as a developmental biologist … I spent a month from July to August 2018 in New York City doing my first graduate school rotation at Memorial Sloan Kettering, learning how to study embryonic development in the fruit fly (Drosophila). I feel very lucky to be at a program that supports me as a Latina in STEM and am really looking forward to growing into a physician scientist.” Veronica Chua was invited to join the Schwarzman Scholars Program Class of 2020, which will fund a yearlong study for a master’s degree at Beijing’s Tsinghua University. The Schwarzman Scholars Program has been called “the most significant program of its kind since the Rhodes Trust”; it was established by the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone. After her time at RE, Chua pursued the Emory/Georgia Tech dual- degree program as a Robert W. Woodruff Scholar studying mathematics, econom- ics, and industrial and systems engineer- ing. Wrote Georgia Tech in a news re- lease: “Even among [the school’s] many excellent students, Chua is a standout.” The first student from Georgia Tech to be selected for the Schwarzman Scholars Program, Chua graduated in December 2018 with highest honors. Aliza Perez graduated from Boston College with a biology degree in 2017. Since gradu- ation, she has worked with numerous physicians as a medical as- sistant/scribe, in addition to completing post-bacca- laureate work at Florida International University. She applied to medical school for the 2019 cycle and is currently in the interview process to see where she will matriculate in the fall. Passionate about helping others, she also started her own editing company in the last year, where she helps high school and college students with resumes and essays. She welcomes RE students and alumni to reach out to her if they have any ques- tions regarding resumes, essays, and/ or the pre-med tract and medical school application process at alizap29@gmail. com .
