RE Log Spring 2019
SPRING 2019 Ransom Everglades LOG 31 Just days after agreeing to join Ransom Everglades as head varsity swim coach and aquatics director, Kyle Hastings stood on the pool deck at the Ansin Aquatic Center coaching RE swimmers, and he hasn’t slowed his pace since. Hastings led the boys’ and girls’ swim teams to district titles, took three relay teams and one individual swimmer to the state championship meet, and – perhaps most significantly – helped launch the school’s first club swimming program. The debut of the Ransom Everglades Aquatic Club under Hastings in January 2019 signaled RE’s determination to offer more extensive opportunities for swim- mers – from beginners to elite athletes – and take full advantage of the premier facilities at the Upper School. Last fall, the boys’ and girls’ school swimming teams won Class 1A District 12 Championships under Hastings, each topping a field of more than 10 schools as three young swimmers – Mattie Barfield ’21, Sophie G ’22 and Magnus Kron ’21 – won individual district titles and claimed multiple medals. Two girls’ relay teams also won gold medals. “This past season was a very good start,” Hastings said. The culture that we are building will be the cornerstone of our very bright future. The athletes and families were committed to excellence, and I could not have been more proud for our first season together.” Hastings, RE’s varsity head swimming coach and aquatics director, previously served as head coach of Central Iowa Aquatics and assistant coach and recruit- ing coordinator at Indiana University. In Iowa, he helped a number of swimmers achieve Olympic trials cuts; at Indiana, he assisted three swimmers who won Olympic gold medals at the 2016 Summer Games. The move to RE represented a return home for Hastings, who served as an as- sistant coach at Belen Jesuit School and gained experience as an assistant coach at Florida International University.
