RE’s team of seven sophomores, one freshman and one junior finished the event on May 25-26, 2019, in Portland, Maine, in a three-way tie for second; the mathematical tiebreaker pushed the Raiders behind Christchurch School in Christchurch, Va., and 2018 champion Point Loma High in San Diego. RE topped the 2017 champion Antilles School, which claimed fourth place, in the competition among 12 regional champions. The Raiders were led by coach Joe Logan and skippers Lachlain McGranahan ’20, Javier Garcon ’21, Stephan Baker ’22 and Liam O’Keefe ’21 . Crew members Hannah Bast ’21, Lucas Vianna ’21, Adam Kaplan ’21, Louis La Fontisse ’21 and Claire Holzman ’21 contributed to the victory, as did assistant coaches Tim Banks and Omari Scott. RE will have the opportunity to improve on its finish in this prestigious championship next year on Biscayne Bay, as the school was awarded the rights to hold the Baker Trophy during Memorial Day weekend in 2020. “I am very proud of our sailors,” Logan said. “Our team is young and we will be able to field the same strong team next year here at RE. It will be exciting to watch our team perform in our backyard at next year’s national championship.” Ransom Everglades also finished the 2018- 19 year atop the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association standings having won four out of seven district regattas and the College of Charleston Invitational.
