Former strength coach Brian Biagioli was a guiding force. Though Cabtree spent most of his career coaching female athletes, he never considered adapting his methods. As an Ohio native, he had been influenced by the legendary football coach Woody Hayes; that was the coaching style he knew. “I don’t coach girls any different than I coach boys,” he said. “I coach athletes.” Nicole Medina-Hospital ’02 , a writing instructor at the University of Miami and Artist in Residence at the Deering Estate, called her former coach and AP Biology teacher a “true feminist.” As a teacher and coach, Crabtree started with students and ended up with fans. “Doc showed overt pride in coaching women,” Medina- Hospital said. “It was great for us… My adventures, my victo- ries and the lessons I learned with Doc are priceless. He will always play the role of hero in my heart.” “Our dad has impacted so many people’s lives in such a positive way, as an educator, coach and mentor. We often hear from those he has influenced and inspired over the years, and we are so lucky to have him as a role model. He continues to set the example in our lives and now sets the example for his granddaughter. Ransom Everglades has always been our second home, but we know retirement will bring new challenges and opportunities for him to change and inspire the community.
