RE Log Spring 2018
SPRING 2018 Ransom Everglades LOG 19 “I was a five-year post-doc with a PhD now teaching high school,” Crabtree said. “I was a young hotshot who thought he knew everything.” Yet instead of earning the respected title of “Dr. Crabtree” among his new colleagues, he found himself referred to around campus as “one of Barbara’s Boys,” a nickname coined by the maintenance staff as Lester, at that time, led an all-male department. And Dan Leslie Bowden, the legendary teacher who was then the English department chair, quickly put Crabtree in his place after listening to the young professor speak a bit too forcefully at a faculty meeting. “Some individuals who haven’t been here very long,” Bowden commented icily, “despite knowing a lot, need to take more time to understand our culture.” Lester, who was sitting next to Crabtree, patted his hand. “I looked at Barbara Lester and said: ‘I’ve just been torched by Dan Bowden!’” Bowden proceeded to send Crabtree several articles on teaching, one explaining how to be authentic in the classroom, GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY UNDER DOC CRABTREE 32 consecutive years qualifying for state championship meet 194-9 record in dual meets 2 state championships 20 top-5 finishes at state 23 district championships (17 consecutive) “He was my teacher at the Upper School in the infamous Anatomy B class, which was one of my favorite classes of all time because of his passion for the subject and his desire to teach it.
