SPRING 2018 Ransom Everglades LOG 63 Shelly Lavigne Rifkin ’69 passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 22, 2017. Jan Salvesen Morrison ’69 , Lee Howell ’69 , Lili Krech Neale ’69 and Susan Fleming ’69 attended Shelly’s Memorial Service at Temple Beth Am in Miami on July 24, 2017. On behalf of Lili Krech Neale, class representative, the entire Class of 1969 sends its deepest sympathy and love to all of Shelly’s family. Gianfranco Scipioni ’11 . Francesco and Susan Scipioni mourn the passing of their beloved son, a robotics star at RE who went on to Vanderbilt University. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful son, Gianfranco Scipioni. He was a light, love and pure joy to everyone who knew him. He will al- ways be remembered as a gift to everyone he touched during his brief 25 years on this earth.” Gianfranco is survived by his parents and brother Luciano Scipioni ’16 . Family and friends celebrated his life on Oct. 7, 2017, at the Key Biscayne Community Church. Francisco Triana ’09 passed as a result of a fall in Cartagena, Colombia, on Jan. 1, 2018. At RE, Francisco served as SGA president and was recognized with both the Mike Stokes and Robert Segall ’82 awards. Francisco went on to Harvard University where he earned a BA in Economics. Francisco was working in capital management in New York City at the time of his death. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ennrique Triana (Claudia), and his two brothers, Enrique Triana ’06 and Pedro Triana ’13 . In Loving Memory William B. Arrington ’62 passed away, June 2, 2017. Jeffrey Laurance Dow, PhD , 69, of Newberry Florida, formerly of Miami, died Dec. 3, 2017. Born in Belfast, Maine, Jeff was a life-long educator who not only taught at Ransom Everglades, but also ran a private tutoring service, and worked with the University of Florida’s Lastinger Center to improve teaching and learn- ing at schools throughout Florida. He is survived by his wife Marty Varnadoe Dow and many family members. Deane Hundley, former RE Director of Development, passed away on Oct. 22, 2017, in Virginia. Over a long career in education and development, he served a number of institutions as development director or chief economic development officer, most notably Ransom Everglades School, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the American Horticultural Society in Alexandria, Va., and most recently The Episcopal School of Texas in San Antonio. Susan Jones , former RE trustee and past parent, passed away at home in Coral Gables on Dec. 25, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. She will be remembered at Ransom Everglades School as a trustee from 1992-98, a loyal parent and volunteer, and a forever friend and advocate. She remained close to many in the RE community, particularly Dan Leslie Bowden. Susan, who served the University of Miami community for more than 20 years, was instrumental in the success of UM’s two major capital campaigns — Momentum 1, which began in 2003, and Momentum 2, in 2012. The two campaigns raised more than $3 billion and helped transform the university’s research cen- ters and classrooms, added student scholarships and awards, and attracted top faculty. Momentum 1 amassed $1.4 billion in donations at a time when no Florida school had topped the billion-dollar mark. Jones’ leadership at UM was recognized through her induction into the Iron Arrow Society, the high- est honor given by the university. Jones also served on the boards of Beaux Arts and the Junior League of Miami. In 2006, Jones received the Sarah Hopkins Woodruff Award at the American Red Cross’ Spectrum Awards for Women. Jones was born June 26, 1945, in Annapolis, Md., to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Lewis D. Tamny and Ann Tamny. As the daughter of a career military family, Jones grew up in numerous posts in Florida — Pensacola, Opa-locka and Sanford — as well as Texas, New Jersey and Rhode Island. She graduated from the University of Florida. In addition to her husband, Jones’ survivors include her sons Patterson and Cooper Jones ’97 ; grandchildren Olivia and Ava; and siblings Michael, Pete and Laiky Tamny.
