Bakes committed to extend her lacrosse career at the University of Southern California, and Bent will play volleyball at Notre Dame. Interim Athletic Director Andy De Angulo served as emcee at the November 2017 ceremony that honored the two most celebrated athletes in Ransom Everglades’ Class of 2018. A US Lacrosse first-team All-American, Bakes has been team captain, team Most Valuable Player and first-team All-Dade for four consecutive years. She also excelled in soccer (third-team All-Dade for two seasons) and volleyball, where she contributed to the 2013 state title. “When you go out to see Erin on the lacrosse field, what she does on that field is truly remarkable,” De Angulo said. “She is one of the top players in the country.” Bent is a third-team All-American, a two-time first-team All-Dade selec- tion, and team captain and MVP. De Angulo lauded her dedication and “sheer will” to succeed, and noted that stopping her became the entire focus of opposing teams’ game plans. You can’t help “noticing how domi- nant of a player she is,” he said. National letters of intent are binding agreements with NCAA Division I schools for a student’s first year in college. At press time, more than a dozen other RE seniors had decided to continue their athletic careers at various colleges and universities, with more expected commitments: The students are: German Giammattei, soccer, Amherst; Falyn Goldstein, crew, Lehigh; Matthew Jackson, baseball, Illinois Tech; Antonio Mora, tennis, Emory; Ellie Moret, cross county/ track and field, Tufts; Tiffany McBrayer, soccer, Sarah Lawrence; Will Miller, football, Chapman; Ines Pinilla, crew, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Reece Ritzenthaler, lacrosse, University of Colorado, Boulder; Matt Simko, swimming/water polo, Brown; Felipe Urrutia, swimming, Chicago; Tucker Weed, sailing, Brown; Julian Zighelboim, soccer, Northwestern. Freshmen in Penny Matthews’ Bay Studies course paddle Ransom Everglades’ new fleet of paddle boards out to Biscayne Bay on a beautiful morning in February. Ransom Everglades acquired 10 of the popular boards last summer for the benefit of the school’s physical education program, enriching an experiential learning curriculum that already included sailing, canoeing and kayaking. Students in the Advanced Bay Studies course also utilize the paddle boards.
