)$// Ransom Everglades LOG 35 $ 1HZ 5( 7UDGLWLRQ 2%2'26 06 VWXGHQWV HQMRy ȅ2QH %RRN 2QH 'Dy 2QH 6FKRROȆ Author Steve Sheinkin was the guest of honor at Ransom Ever- JODGHV 0LGGOH 6FKRRO IRU WKH ¿UVW DQQXDO 2QH %RRN 2QH 'D\ 2QH School (OBODOS) event April 11, which provided students with a multi-faceted immersion into Sheinkin’s book, The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights. The entire Middle School student body read the book in advance of OBODOS, which began and ended with sessions with Sheinkin, a John Newberry Medal winner. In between, students engaged in a variety of activities that helped illuminate the events and period of history the book detailed. During World War II, 50 African-Amer- ican sailors were charged with mutiny after refusing to go back to work following an explosion at a naval base in California that killed 300 other African-American sailors.
