RE LOG Fall 2017
72 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2017 Arlene Sierra writes, “Hello from London! A few updates: My orchestral piece Moler , which was commissioned by the Seattle Symphony in 2012, will be performed by the Boston Symphony with Andris Nelsons conducting. This will be at Symphony Hall in Boston on October 5-7. My newest piece, Nature Symphony , was commissioned by the BBC and will have its premiere with the BBC Philharmonic and Ludovic Morlot conducting. This will be at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, England, on November 25. Last year I had the pleasure of working with RE alumna Jessica Ames ’87 , who choreographed and danced to several of my pieces in performances around New York City in the spring and summer of 2016. Finally, my little son Elliott is about to turn five and start school in September. Here in the UK, school starts with ‘reception’ which is the equivalent of kindergarten but full time. It will a momentous change for him, not to mention for his dad and me!” 1988 Lisa Arky Buchwald and her husband Jeff met up with Julio Pita while on vacation in Vail, Colo., this summer. Julio, a pilot for United Airlines, moved to Denver this summer with his family. Justin B. Elegant has joined Berger Singerman, Florida’s business law firm, as a partner on the dispute resolution team. Justin is an accomplished civil trial and appellate lawyer. He brings more than two decades of legal expertise and philanthropic involvement to the firm. Justin lives on Miami Beach with his wife, Jennifer, and two sons, Luke ’19 and Hudson. Luke is a junior at Ransom Everglades as Hudson enters ninth grade at Philips Academy, Andover, Mass. Adam Gelber, see Cecilia Calleros ’94. Connie Taudt-Ehrling writes, “To our great joy our son, Colin ’23 , entered RE as a sixth grader last fall (2016). To spend a few days and evenings on campus for the tours and orientations was a great trip down memory lane. I was thrilled to find myself in a seat in front of Mrs. Onorati (see story page 26) for a mock math class on one of those tours! Mrs. Onorati opened the door to the math world for me with her engaging humor and showed me math was neither boring nor something to fear. I am so grateful to think Colin may be able to have the same experience I had. Colin finished off the year strong and enjoyed after-school RE sailing, intramurals and lacrosse along the way. I am nearing my 25th year as a professional architect, and for the last seven of those have been working with the education group at Zyscovich Architects. It’s a sector I fell into almost accidentally, but the ever-evolving theories of how learning environments impact children and their education grabbed hold of my soul. I’ve had the good fortune to work on over two dozen master plans for lower and higher-ed campus across the country, as well as new STEM, performing arts, and 21st-century classroom buildings for several schools across South Florida. Rather than heading back to Germany this summer, we will be exploring some of our own backyard natural wonders including the Rockies, Arches National Park, Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. “ Heidi Howard Tandy writes, “Such fun getting to hang out with Richard Blaustein and Peter Frank this past May at our Penn reunion! And, as Vicki ( Carbonell Williamson ’88 ) reminded me this morning, our next big reunion at Ransom Everglades is next spring! Hope to see many of you there!” Monkey van de Kreeke, see Juan Pedro Alvarez ’92. Matt Wilson writes, “A couple of weeks ago I went to my 25th-year college reunion and got to hang with fellow ’88 Rob Koreman and his lovely better half. That weekend reminded me just how much I am looking forward to our 30th. I was so bummed when I had to miss our 25th at the last minute. See you next year!” Class Notes
