RE LOG Fall 2017

66 Ransom Everglades LOG FALL 2017 Class Ransom School 1934 Forty-three works of the late painter Emilio Sánchez were showcased from February 9 to May 21, 2017, at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami in an exhibition called “Emilio Sanchez in South Florida Collections.” The exhibition honored the legacy of the Cuban-American Sánchez, who died in 1999 after capturing the architec- ture, landscapes and color of New York, the Caribbean and Latin America in his scenes of everyday life. Emily Elkin ’11 worked on this project as research assistance to Dr. Victor Deupi, curator for the exhibition. 1958 Edward G. L. Carter , a great nephew of Ruth Ransom, says “Sawasdee” (greetings!) from Thailand and reports that his “book is progressing nicely – The Amazing Life and Times of Edward Carter. Chapter One features my time at RE.” You can read along here: http://bit.ly/2tKi9ow 1967 Dan Brock was sorry to miss the Ransom 1967 reunion in April due to a business conflict in Las Vegas. After Las Vegas, Dan was off to visit his newest grandchild in San Francisco, grandchild number five. He reports: “If you are wondering … yes … I still work in the commercial aviation field as a consultant. And yes, as we may have discussed, I am still into music and playing the upright bass for a North Carolina bluegrass band.” 1968 Barry Lewald recently moved to Gainesville, Fla. Barry and his 1968 classmates Mike Maisel, Alan Sanchez and John Shepherd had a mini-reunion during the 2017 Reunion Weekend. It was important for them to spend time with former professors Mike Stokes and Dan Leslie Bowden as well as their dear friends from 1967. Ned Moore has been elected to the board of directors of the St. John’s Church Foundation, which is charged with the preservation of St. John’s Church, a national historic landmark in Richmond, Va. In 1775, a year prior to drafting the Declaration of Independence, the church hosted Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry and other del- egates at the Second Virginia Convention. During the heated debate over whether or not to take the radical step of raising and arming troops that could oppose the British army, Patrick Henry gave his now-famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech that ignited the American Revolution, making St. John’s a must-see landmark for anyone interested in the Revolution and the universal struggle for human rights. Moore is the former president of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, where he worked with a statewide board comprised of corporate executives, college presidents and foundation representatives to expand awareness, interest and support of the pri- vate college sector in the Commonwealth. Tal Vivian writes: “I have stayed busy as I just assumed a position as a member of the York County School Board in York County, Va. This is in addition to being a member of the board of directors for Colonial Behavioral Health and faculty member at Old Dominion University. I teach in the Health Care Administration program: Health Care Marketing, Health Care Systems, Health Care Administration I and II. Though I am staying busy, it is all a lot of fun.” Notes Michael Wohlfield reports that he is liv- ing happily with his wife Nora – and their church family. He tells us, “We meditate daily, which brings peace, love and harmony to ourselves and neighbors. Far more lasting with only positive side effects. Certainly beats alcohol, drugs and sex, which we have all used thinking this is as good as it gets, but all those are only temporary and short-lived.” 1969 W. Kai Jelstrom is married and living in Orlando, Fla. He has been employed full time as a food broker since 1980. Kai writes, “Blessed with two children, one grandchild, a wonderful life of faith and hope in a bright future. God bless all my old classmates.” 1970 Chris Haub sends a photo of Timothy Greenfield-Sanders ’70 and himself “with Class of ’70 legend, Lee Stockdale , enjoy[ing] a 47-year reunion in New York City, during which we reached David Fraleigh ’70 on the phone and remembered many assorted classmates, while going through TGS’s upcoming commencement speech.” Timothy Greenfield-Sanders ’70 was selected as the 2017 recipient of the 2017 Ransom Everglades School Alumni Founders’ Award. Head of School Penny Townsend presented him this honor at the 2017 Commencement, where he gave the commencement address. See pages 6 and 40.
