FALL 2016 Ransom Everglades LOG 61 2013 Aliza Perez writes “I will be entering my fourth year of undergraduate studies at Boston College. My major is biology and I am in the pre-med tract. At Boston College, I am a health coach and mentor for Latino students as well as pre-med students. I am the public relations representative for the Cuban-American Student Association as well as member of Fuego, Boston College’s Latin dance team. I studied abroad in Venice International University during the summer of 2015. I am a part of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. After I graduate from B.C. in May 2017 I plan to work for a year and then apply to medical school. During the summer of 2016, I took physics and worked with a dermatologist.” Sam Singer earned honorable mention Pac-12 Academic All-American status for the second straight season as a junior guard at the University of California. He started nine games at guard, averaging 19.9 minutes, 3.7 points and 2.5 rebounds. The Bears made it to the NCAA tourna- ment last March, losing in the first round. 2015 The innovative, scientific and often bub- bling or exploding dishes prepared by chefs David Lanster and Kelly Moran were on display at a host of historic and interest- ing Miami locales – Coral Gables Merrick House, Soho Beach House, LAB Miami, Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Locust Projects and Deering Estate over the sum- mer. The company the pair started as RE juniors – DK Culinary Ventures – executed a Traveling Dinner Series called “Axis.” The team “popped-up” at various venues across Miami, serving up signature 16-course menus to 18 guests each night. 2016 Welcome Members of the Class of 2016 to the RE Alumni Association! Faculty/Staff Gila Aloni was invited this spring to contribute to a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the South Atlantic Modern Language Association. Her article, “From Medieval to Pop Culture: An Old- World New Text, the Golem of Prague – A Traveling Monster/Hero” was included in a special issue devoted to texts as memoirs. Aloni’s paper studies an Israeli graphic novel as a mnemonic device in the form of comics. Michelle Black recently served as a Fairness Reviewer for the College Board SAT Writing and Language forms. Michele was tasked with reviewing SAT test forms specifically for anything that could be viewed as discriminatory, and determin- ing whether the forms included words or concepts that may not be familiar to all students regardless of culture, gender, age, ethnicity, etc. She joined 19 other review- ers on the SAT. Jennifer Carey has been accepted to present at the National Association of Independent Schools’ annual conference in March 2017 with Sarah Hanawald, Executive Director of the Association of Technology Leaders at Independent Schools, and Kelsey Vrooman, Director of Instructional Design and Technology at NAIS. They will present on, “Technology at your Service: Building a Mission-Driven Technology Department.” Jackie Collaso, see Sharon Halstead ’89, see Cristel Marin, see George Kasyan Jean Duty took part in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Teachers program, which is designed to give teachers an opportunity to conduct STEM research under the guid- ance of a professor and with the help of a graduate student. The opportunity was facilitated by Dr. Niki Pissinou, parent of Alex Pissinou Makki ’17 . Jean worked with FIU professor Leonardo Bobadilla and graduate student Tauhidul Alam on fractals in robotics. The goal of the project was to develop a method for a robot to interact with an unknown terrain using fractals to help it navigate that terrain. It remains ongoing. Jean reports that the experience was educational and exciting, allowing her to dive deep into a subject that always fascinated her. She noted that the opportunity to research and use the programming software, MatLab, will inform her teaching of mathematics, and offered a special thanks to Dr. Pissinou for providing the opportunity. Ann Goesel , faculty emeritus, celebrated her 90th birthday on August 25. Ann en- joyed the day with family and friends at a luncheon at the Pagoda hosted by Head of School Penny Townsend.
