He has brought a range of engaging events to Spasso, from live music to deejays to karaoke nights to game-day Sundays. RE faculty, students and friends flocked to Spasso on Aug. 19 to cheer Ashleigh Johnson ’12 on to an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Olympic women’s water polo team. The Miami Herald and NBC Channel 6 showed up. “We really want to work our curb appeal to offer a happy and fun place to dine and spend time,” David said. 2005 Wifredo Fernandez is now working at FIU, and is helping develop a new univer- sity-wide startup initiative. He is in charge of Innovation and Economic Development at the university. Alex Vara is a fourth-year orthopedic surgery resident at Beaumont Health System in Michigan. He will be applying for an upper extremity fellowship in this coming year. He looks forward to coming back home in a few years! 2005 Courtney Lenner was promoted to Technical Project Manager in August 2015 after five years at American Express. She completed her MBA at the University of Florida in July 2016. She is living in a Miami and recently got engaged to Sean Comroe, an attorney from Philadelphia who went to University of Miami Law School. Their wedding will take place in Miami in March 2017. 2006 Brett Simon reports: “In June 2015, I graduated from a two-year Masters in Architecture program at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark. Additionally, I attended Danish language night classes and became fluent in Danish. I still listen to Danish audio books to stay current. Since last October I have been working at McKenzie Craft, a custom mill- work company located in the Allapattah neighborhood. This past May I partici- pated in the Our House event hosted by Brillhart Architecture and Gretel Home. Three furniture pieces I designed and built while attending the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, ME, (2012- 13) were displayed at the Brillhart home in the Spring Garden neighborhood. Included is a photo of the piece ‘Cupid’s Bench’ displayed amongst other items at the event. In my spare time I crew on an Etchells sailboat and play ultimate Frisbee on Key Biscayne.” Zachary Skipp reports that he earned his MFA in Film and Television Production from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts and moved from Pasadena to Santa Monica. He has ac- cepted a job as an Agent Trainee at United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills. 2008 Claudia Curiel recently won an Emmy Award at the 58th Emmy Awards for The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This was her first Emmy nomination as well as her first win. Claudia is currently working as a reporter and anchor for Telemundo in Washington, D.C. During her time as a journalist in Washington, Claudia has served as mis- tress of ceremonies at several high-profile events and covered a range of stories from the recent immigration crisis, special invitations from the White House and the historic Papal visit. Scott Cypen moved back to Miami to accept a job working in compliance for the University of Miami’s athletic department. Scott recently interned at RE in the athlet- ics department while getting his master’s in sports management from UM. Scott now happily resides in Coral Gables. 2009 Alex Hamm is a singer-songwriter for the Los Angeles-based rock duo Miracle Monday, which recently completed a southwestern U.S. road trip. Formerly known as “A Few Good Years,” the band features Alex on guitar and Michael Coverly on bass. The duo was affiliated with the Vans Warped Tour ’16, with the young L.A. artists serving the tour as volunteers and performing their original music to enthusiastic gatherings along the way. The band sold hundreds of CDs and various Miracle Monday shirts and other merchandise. Fans in several cities enjoyed the live performances and posted their support on the band’s Instagram page. Miracle Monday produces 100 percent of its music, recordings, perfor- mances, CDs and merchandise. Matt Hoffer-Hawlik showed off his command of facts on the game show Jeopardy! on July 6, defeating two op- ponents and winning more than $29,000. Hoffer-Hawlik, who attended Yale and works at the investment bank Outcome Capital in Boston Mass., took home another $2,000 but was eliminated the next night. Hoffer-Hawlik, the brother of current RE student Carson Hoffer- Hawlik ’19 as well as RE alums Kevin Hoffer-Hawlik ’15 and Michael Hoffer-Hawlik ’11 , said the passion for knowledge that helped him secure a spot on the show was inspired in part from his four years of experience on the RE Academic Team, which won several state championships during his tenure. He also competed on the RE Geography Team and the Academic Competitions Team at Yale. Katie Kralievits urged RE students during an assembly in April to do some- thing about the disparity in healthcare that exists around the world, investing their efforts in substantive programs rather than short-term relief efforts that often have little impact. Kralievits is a research assistant to Dr. Paul Farmer at the Boston-based Partners in Health, a medical non-profit that partners with local organizations and ministries of health in 10 countries to provide quality healthcare to those living in poverty. “I think we can all agree Katie is living Paul Ransom’s mission,” Head of School Penny
