said, “When I come to Ransom Everglades I feel like I’m at
Disneyworld.” Where everything is perfect, you know? And
that’s exactly right, this is a tremendous and fabulous place. I
was told to expect this, but I did not think it was possible...this
is the extreme of my expectations of what I thought I would
encounter here.
JP: Awesome! So you teach Chorus here, do you also teach
AP Music Theory?
Carillo: Yes, I teach Music Theory here, the Honors course 3
and 4, and at the Middle School I teach the beginning course.
JP: So how did you get into singing and music?
Carillo: Oh...into music or singing?
JP: Well...both.
Carillo: I got into music because I was always very interested
as a child and at age fifteen I had the opportunity of taking
Music Theory classes at UM. It was challenging but it was
also quite, quite interesting. I did that for a while and ended
up becoming a Music Major because I love it...I love to write
music. As far as the choral aspect is concerned...that was an
accident. I was teaching at the magnet program and since
there were some issues I was asked to teach chorus. I had
never taught chorus before. But I thought of it as a challenge
and I accepted and ended up teaching chorus there for many
years. The students there did incredibly well and I recently
had a conversation with Al Clark, the Choral Director at
New World School of the Arts, and he was telling me that
our school at that point was sending him huge amounts of
students who were feeding into New World and getting all
Superiors at competitions. The kids were amazing and they
did a great job. It was an accident that I...
JP: But a good accident.
Carillo: It was a good accident absolutely. When you’re a
musician you should wear many hats and be willing to learn.
One of the things that I consider myself to be is a professional
student. So there may be something I might not quite fully
grasp at this moment, but I will do my best to master it and
eventually teach it. So that’s my philosophy.
JP: Great. So do you come from a musical family?
Carillo: I do but there aren’t any musicians in my family as far
as someone who’s studied music.
JP: What do you mean?
Carillo: Well my grandmother played piano and my dad plays
by ear. I have a few cousins that play, but no one really took it
seriously. I took it seriously.
JP: What instruments do you play?
Carillo: I play piano, it’s my principle instrument.
JP: Anything else?
Carillo: Well I sing, right? But besides that no, at least not well
enough to say I actually play that instrument.
JP: Haha, ok. Are there any singers you admire?
Carillo:...Singers...well you know...
JP: Or musical groups?
Carillo: When it comes to music my tastes are very eclectic so I
can enjoy anything from Maria Callas who’s an extraordinary
singer, to a pop group-

Julian Palmer, Junior
Professor of finance at FIU, chorus and music theory
teacher at Ransom Everglades, and owner of his own
financial investment firm, Mr. Carillo seemingly does it all.
He is incredibly well educated and insightful- the expanse
of his intellect ranges from numbers and business to the
abstractness of music. We are certainly lucky to have him.
Here are some of his thoughts on music, philosophy, and
Ransom Everglades.
JP:Where do you come from? Where did you teach before if
you have taught before?
Carillo: Regarding music?
JP: Yes
Carillo: Ok, I was actually a middle school Choral Director
at a magnet program in Dade county. I did that for six years.
The last two years that I taught chorus were from 2001 to
2003
and that was at Felix Varela Senior High School. I was
enrolled in a graduate program while teaching at the high
school level and eventually switched careers. So now I run my
own business, it’s a financial investment firm and I’m also a
professor of finance at FIU currently. But I was very excited
at the possibility of once again teaching music, especially at
such an incredible school like Ransom Everglades and it’s not
the buildings that make a school special it’s the students, you
know, they’re incredible.
JP: Well I’m glad to hear you like it. So you grew up in the
Miami area?
Carillo: I grew up in Miami...
JP: So Ransom Everglades is normal, it’s not a new, exotic
place for you?
Carillo: No, no, no...well it is exotic, it is a beautiful place, but
I grew up in Miami.
JP: Where have you studied?
Carillo: I have a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of
Miami inMusic Theory and Composition, a Master’s inMusic
from UM, an MBA and Masters in Business Administration
from FIU, and a Master’s of Science in Finance from FIU.
JP: Ok, wow. So you say you like Ransom Everglades so far?
Carillo: It is an incredible place. We had a dinner with Ms.
Moceri a few weeks ago and someone described Ransom
Everglades exactly how I feel when I come here. The person
